Lansing is the capital of Michigan, as well as the state’s fifth-largest city. Settled in 1835 and incorporated in 1859, Lansing today covers 36 square miles of land, home to a population of about 116,000 people.
Lansing sits at the center of a state region known as Mid-Michigan or Central Michigan, mostly in Ingham County with portions extending into neighboring Eaton and Clinton Counties. Still, it’s the only U.S. state capital that does not also serve as a county seat. The city is divided into four main sections: Eastside, Westside, Northwestside and the Southside. Lansing is home to the Library of Michigan and Historical Center, as well as several small, specialized museums. The area is home to two medical schools, two nursing schools and two law schools.
